HISTORY OF THE LONDON & HOME COUNTIES TERRIER CLUB

The inaugural meeting of the London & Home Counties Terrier Club was held 10th December 1964 at the Albert Restaurant,Victoria, London. Group Captain A. G. Sutton OBE held the chair.

At this meeting Mr B. G. Dennis was elected chairman, Mr T. J. Horner secretary and Mr C. W. Rippingale treasurer. Mr Horner held the position of secretary for fourteen years until retiring in 1979 through ill health.

He was followed by Mr Reg Hunt and Mr Wally Topham until April 1981.

At that particular time the L & H C T C was in the doldrums, entries were low and owing to difficulties in its structure the club badly needed updating. Mike Homan was elected club secretary in 1981, Mr Pat Burke, Chairman and Mr Cyril Windsor elected treasurer. Alterations were made to the composition of the club and the situation rapidly improved. The London & Home Counties Terrier Club entered into its halcyon years and became one of the most important show dates on the calendar.

Owing to ill health Mr Pat Burke retired and shortly afterwards due to business demands, Mr Cyril Windsor also stepped down from his position. Mr Peter Eva was elected chairman and remained so for almost 20 years. Margaret East served alongside him as Treasurer eventually retiring she emigrated to Australia with husband Terry, another loyal committee member.

In 2000, Mrs Gill Thomas became Treasurer holding the position for 5 years before her election as Secretary in 2006. After serving on the committee for several years, Mr Brett Lay became Chairman resigning in 2014 when Mr David Payton was duly elected to the position. Mrs Alice Levy was elected Treasurer in 2011 – the position vacated by Mr Alan Muir.

To date, the longest serving members of the L & H C T C are Ella Eva (retired from the committee a few short years ago) and Mike Homan, both coming aboard during the second half of the 1970’s. Mike Homan the current President was elected as a Life Vice President.of the club at the 2015 Annual General Meeting in recognition of his long & distinguished service.

2016 brought a change of Officers when Mr David Payton Chairman, retired from the committee. He was replaced by Mrs Gill Thomas as Acting Chairman & Mr Brian Collins as Acting Secretary. This year also saw the inclusion of Jack Russell Terriers onto the Kennel Club register of recognised breeds and as a welcome addition to the London & Home Counties Terrier Club annual Show.
